His work explores the historical intersections of economic development, political systems, and environmental impacts, notably in his book Red Meat Republic: A Hoof-to-Table History of How Beef Changed America (2019), which examines the social and ecological consequences of industrial beef production. Current research investigates nineteenth-century American politics and institutions through political-ecology.
