White's research explores the intersection of maritime violence, legal systems, and cross-cultural interactions in the Ottoman Mediterranean. His work analyzes how piracy shaped imperial governance, how enslaved individuals navigated legal systems for freedom, and the role of Islamic jurisprudence in trans-imperial diplomacy. He employs microhistorical approaches to examine these macro-historical processes.
His publications span themes of maritime law, slavery dynamics, and diplomatic praxis across the 17th-21st centuries. White has held prestigious fellowships including ACLS, NEH, and Mellon/ACLS grants, and received the 2012 Arthur Fondiler Award for Best Dissertation in History at the University of Michigan.
