Joshua Liao

Joshua Liao is a Professor in the UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he serves as Chief of the William T. and Gay F. Solomon Division of General Internal Medicine and holds the Walter Family Distinguished Chair. He directs the Program on Policy Evaluation and Learning and leads research methods at the UT Southwestern Clinical and Translational Science Program.

• Education: B.A. in English Literature, Biochemistry, and Cell Biology from Rice University (magna cum laude); M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine; M.Sc. in Health Policy Research from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Liao’s research focuses on health systems policy, payment reform, and care delivery innovation. His work examines socioeconomic disparities in bundled payment models, telemedicine access, EHR-based behavioral interventions, and strategies to combat health inequities through policy evaluation.

His recent publications address health equity in palliative care, AI decision support systems, cost barriers in asthma management, and value-based care models. His articles span journals like JAMA Network Open, Health Services Research, and BMJ Open, emphasizing empirical policy evaluation and pragmatic clinical trials.

Dr. Liao has secured over $15 million in NIH funding and serves on national advisory bodies like the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and the Physician-Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee.
