Joshua Lee is an Associate Professor at the School of Electrical and Data Engineering, University of Technology Sydney (since August 2023). He holds a BA/MEng (2005) and PhD (2009) from the University of Cambridge. His expertise spans Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS), piezoelectric devices, and acoustofluidics, with applications in sensors, actuators, and biomedical technologies.
Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor (2009–2015) and Associate Professor (2015–2020) at City University of Hong Kong, affiliated with the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves. At IME/A*STAR (2020–2023), he led research on piezoelectric MEMS for semiconductor innovation amid the global chip shortage. He also served as Program Leader for Research Degrees (2016–2020) and Visiting Professor at Université Grenoble Alpes (2017).
His research focuses on piezoelectric MEMS, acoustic devices (e.g., PMUTs), and acoustofluidic particle manipulation. Key applications include ultrasonic imaging, wireless power delivery, and IoT sensors. He has pioneered low-power MEMS-based wake-up sensors and lab-on-chip systems.
- Recipient of multiple teaching awards at CityU for excellence in education
- Active editorial roles: Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems (Associate Editor), Micromachines (Editorial Board), and Sensors International
- Organized the 37th European Frequency and Timing Forum (2024)
His work bridges fundamental science and translational research, addressing global challenges in microelectronics and healthcare. Current affiliations include the Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration (CAAV) at UTS.
