Joshua Lawrence is a Professor at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Institute for Educational Research and the Department of Education. He holds an EdD in Education from Boston University, an MAT in Teaching English as a Second Language from Salem State University, and a BA in Ancient Philosophy from the University of Calgary. His research focuses on vocabulary development, bilingual education, reading comprehension, and quantitative methodology. He has conducted extensive studies on language acquisition in diverse populations, including Uyghur children and Chinese-Norwegian bilingual learners. Lawrence leads research projects like ‘Better equipped for school’ and is part of the Literacy and Numeracy in Context (LiNCon) research group. His work emphasizes experimental and longitudinal methods, with a focus on interventions to improve academic language and disciplinary learning. Recent studies include examining parental influence on literacy and the role of idioms in vocabulary growth. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based educational practices.
