Dr. Joshua Kortum is a Researcher at the Chair of Mathematics VI (Mathematics in the Sciences) at the University of Würzburg. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the same institution (2022), specializing in partial differential equations and their applications in fluid dynamics and material science. His research focuses on mathematical analysis of complex fluid models including liquid crystals, magnetoviscoelasticity, and boundary layer phenomena.
Education:
- PhD in Mathematics (2017–2022), University of Würzburg. Thesis: Global Existence and Uniqueness Results for Nematic Liquid Crystal and Magnetoviscoeastic Flows (Supervisor: Prof. Anja Schlömerkemper)
- MSc in Mathematics (2015–2017), University of Würzburg. Thesis: Existence of a solution for an evolutionary magnetostrictive model (Supervisor: Prof. Anja Schlömerkemper)
- BSc in Mathematics (2013–2015), University of Würzburg (Supervisor: Prof. Jürgen Appell)
Research interests include:
- Analysis of PDEs in fluid mechanics
- Mathematical models for liquid crystals and viscoelastic materials
- Instability and well-posedness properties of boundary layer equations
Teaching activities include courses on analysis, partial differential equations, and exercises for computer science students. His publications focus on rigorous analysis of nonlinear PDE systems with applications in materials science and fluid dynamics.
