Joshua Bauder is an Adjunct Professor of Music Theory, Aural Skills, and Composition at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Northwestern - St. Paul. He holds a BA in Music and Philosophy from the University of St. Thomas, and an MA and PhD in Music Composition from the University of Minnesota. His research and creative work focus on sacred choral music, music theory pedagogy, and the intersection of theology and aesthetics in composition.
Dr. Bauder’s compositions have been performed internationally by ensembles such as Deo Cantamus of Minnesota and the Twin Cities Master Chorale. He has received accolades including the 2015 VocalEssence Carol Contest and the 2010 Jerome Grant for New Music. His works are published by Fred Bock, Hinshaw, and Jubal House, among others.
In teaching, he emphasizes experiential learning in music theory and aural skills, integrating diverse cultural and historical contexts. Current courses include How Music Works and Musicianship & Theory II. He also mentors students in composition through specialized courses.
Bauder’s creative work extends to score engraving for renowned choirs and orchestras. His personal interests include theology, architectural history, and fiction writing. He lives in Saint Michael, Minnesota.
