Associate Professor Josh Ramsay is affiliated with Curtin University, holding positions in the Curtin Medical School and Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI), Faculty of Health Sciences. He also serves as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia. His research focuses on bacterial mobile genetic elements, including plasmids and integrative conjugative elements, studying their regulation, evolution, and role in antibiotic resistance and symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Ramsay leads the Ramsay Lab, established in 2013, which investigates mechanisms of horizontal gene transfer in pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and beneficial rhizobia.
Education: PhD and BSc(Hons) in Genetics from the University of Otago, New Zealand.
Research Interests: Bacterial genetics, horizontal gene transfer dynamics, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and symbiosis in rhizobia. His work bridges molecular biology, microbiology, and applied genomics to address challenges in infectious diseases and sustainable agriculture.
Awards include the 2023 Frank Fenner Award and multiple Curtin University publication awards for impactful work in PNAS and Nature SMB. His grants include an ARC Future Fellowship ($780k) for nitrogen fixation research and NHMRC funding for antibiotic resistance studies.
Grants/Fellowships: ARC Future Fellowship (2017), NHMRC Project Grant (2017), Marsden Fund Award (2017), and Linkage Infrastructure grants (2017).
Labs/Teams: The Ramsay Lab collaborates on projects involving bacterial genetics, pathogen evolution, and phage therapy, with a focus on public health and agricultural applications.
