Josh McLoud

Josh McLoud is a Lecturer in the Biology department at Baylor University, actively teaching undergraduate courses in the SEA-PHAGES program since 2021. He collaborates with Dr. Fred Baliraine across multiple semesters and course sections.

His educational background includes:

• BS in Biological Sciences from Oklahoma State University (Stillwater) with a minor in Microbiology
• MS in Botany

McLoud's research spans Microbiology, Genomics, and Evolutionary Biology, with specialized focus on Fungal Biology and Plant Genetics. His work integrates phage discovery with genomic analysis, emphasizing microbial diversity and host-pathogen interactions through the SEA-PHAGES initiative. Current teaching emphasizes hands-on laboratory techniques in phage isolation and bioinformatics.

As an educator, McLoud has instructed 12+ sections of BIOL1111 (phage discovery) and BIOL1121 (phage genomics) from 2021-2025, guiding 150+ undergraduates in Mycobacterium smegmatis-based research. He co-leads Baylor's SEA-PHAGES team, developing curriculum for phage genomics and microbial evolution.

McLoud contributes to national SEA-PHAGES workshops and maintains active involvement in SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science), supporting underrepresented students in STEM.
