Josh Kacher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He joined Georgia Tech in 2015 as an Assistant Professor and previously conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, collaborating with General Motors and the U.S. Navy on materials science projects. His research focuses on understanding defect behavior in materials under extreme conditions using advanced techniques like in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Key areas include corrosion mechanisms, additive manufacturing, and microstructural characterization.
Education: PhD and Master’s work centered on multiscale electron microscopy techniques, with a focus on defect behavior in materials such as ion-irradiated steels and magnesium alloys. His lab, the Kacher Lab, explores materials for extreme environments, including nuclear reactors and long-term use scenarios.
Research Interests: Biomolecular-solids interactions, corrosion science, defect dynamics, and the development of novel materials through additive manufacturing. His work bridges experimental and computational methods to analyze deformation, spall failure, and nanoscale corrosion processes.
Publications highlight contributions to understanding grain boundary effects, twinning in titanium alloys, and the application of advanced microscopy techniques. Awards include membership/fellowship in The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS).
