Josh Hendrikse is a Research Fellow at Monash University's Turner Institute for Brain & Mental Health. He holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from Monash University (2015–2021), a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from Deakin University (2013–2014), and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Melbourne (2009–2011). His research focuses on the effects of physical exercise and non-invasive brain stimulation on neuroplasticity and cognitive function, particularly in aging populations. He employs neuroimaging techniques (MR spectroscopy, fMRI, EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation, and exercise physiology methods (e.g., indirect calorimetry).
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing education and health improvements. He has secured competitive grants, including an Australian Research Council project (2024–2026) as Primary Chief Investigator. Notable achievements include the 2021 Best ECR Oral Presentation award and the 2022 Faculty Bridging Fellowship. His research highlights include studies on exercise-induced neuroplasticity in memory and motor learning, as well as investigations into white matter alterations in chronic cannabis use disorder.
Recent projects include exploring synergies between exercise, brain stimulation, and neuroplasticity, and developing transcranial focused ultrasound neuromodulation systems. He has supervised students and authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles, with a focus on aging-related cognitive decline and exercise interventions.
