Professor Josephine Ross is a developmental psychologist at the University of Dundee, holding the Chair of Developmental Psychology in the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law. Her research focuses on the cognitive and social consequences of self-awareness, exploring how the self develops across lifespan and influences social cognition, morality, and memory. She leads the Mini Me Research Lab, investigating topics such as theory of mind, cross-cultural self-perception, and art-based interventions for parent-infant wellbeing.
Key research areas include:
- Cross-cultural studies of self-recognition and attachment
- Links between metacognition and theory of mind development
- Applications of self-reference effects in education and memory research
- Art therapy interventions for infant mental health (e.g., the Art at the Start project)
- Dementia and selfhood: Exploring parallels between childhood self-development and age-related self-dissolution
She has secured significant funding including a Leverhulme Grant (£228k) and ESRC award (£481k), and won the UK’s 2024 Strategic Knowledge Exchange Partnership award. Her teaching includes courses on developmental psychology, self-awareness, and research ethics.
Collaborations include working with art galleries (Dundee Contemporary Arts) and NHS partners to scale evidence-based interventions. Recent work explores bilingualism’s impact on self-systems via dialect studies.
