Josephine Anstey

Josephine Anstey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media Study at the University at Buffalo, within the College of Arts and Sciences. Her work bridges electronic literature, virtual reality, intermedia performance, and speculative fiction, with a focus on narrative experimentation, identity, and consciousness.

• Education: MFA in Electronic Visualization from the University of Illinois at Chicago (2000), MA in Women’s Studies/American Studies from the University at Buffalo, and BA in English Studies from the University of East Anglia, UK.

Anstey’s creative practice spans interactive drama, VR, and responsive environments, often involving intelligent agents and collaborative performance. Her recent work IMPROVISING CONSCIOUSNESS explores speculative evolution and affirmative bio-political futures through hybrid media formats.

She co-founded the Intermedia Performance Studio at UB, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between media creators, performers, and technologists. Her works are held in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Ars Electronica Center (Austria).
