Joseph William Singer is the Bussey Professor of Law at Harvard Law School since 2006, following a tenure as Professor of Law there from 1992. Previously, he taught at Boston University School of Law (1984–1992). He holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1981), an A.M. in Political Science from Harvard University (1978), and a B.A. in Political Economy from Williams College (1976). His academic focus spans property law, conflict of laws, federal Indian law, and legal theory with an emphasis on moral and political philosophy.
He is a prolific author, having published over 90 law review articles and authored/co-authored influential books such as Property, Property Law: Cases, Policies, & Practices, and No Freedom Without Regulation: The Hidden Lesson of the Subprime Crisis. He has also received notable honors, including the Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Prize and multiple distinguished lectureships.
Singer’s research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to legal issues, particularly addressing intersections of law with social justice, indigenous rights, and ethical governance. His work often critiques regulatory frameworks and advocates for balanced approaches to property rights and public welfare.
