Dr. Joseph Stone Doggett is a Professor at Oregon Health & Science University's Department of Infectious Diseases. With an M.D. from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine (2004), residency in Internal Medicine (2007), and fellowship in Infectious Diseases (2009), his career focuses on experimental chemotherapy for parasitic diseases. Affiliated with the Portland VA Research Foundation's Experimental Chemotherapy Lab, he specializes in malaria and toxoplasmosis drug development.
- Education: M.D. (2004), Residency (2007), Fellowship (2009)
- Current Position: Professor, Oregon Health & Science University
His research combines structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies and in vivo modeling to develop novel antiparasitic agents. Key work includes endochin-like quinolones and bumped kinase inhibitors targeting cytochrome bc1 and calcium-dependent kinases in Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium species. Recent studies focus on drug combination therapies and resistance mechanisms in apicomplexan parasites.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2024-2025) reveals trends in:
- Antimalarial drug development (ELQ-331, acridones)
- Mechanism-based chemotherapy for toxoplasmosis
- Multistage parasite targeting
- Drug synergy in veterinary parasitology (Babesia, Neospora)
- Structural biology of parasite respiratory chains
- Isotopically modified antiparasitic compounds
His work intersects medical microbiology, pharmacology, and translational research, with collaborations across academic, veterinary, and public health institutions. Current projects include optimizing in vivo drug efficacy and exploring novel delivery methods for parasitic disease prevention.
