معرفی
Joseph Schlessinger is the William H. Prusoff Professor of Pharmacology at Yale School of Medicine, where he is a leading figure in the Department of Pharmacology and a key member of multiple interdisciplinary research centers, including the Yale Cancer Biology Institute, Diabetes Research Center, and the Structural Biology program. His work bridges fundamental molecular mechanisms with translational applications in cancer and metabolic disorders.
- PhD, Weizmann Institute of Science (1974)
- MSc, Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1969)
- BS, Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1968)
Dr. Schlessinger's research is centered on receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), which are critical regulators of cell proliferation, survival, and metabolism. His laboratory has pioneered structural studies of RTKs such as FGFR and KIT, elucidating how ligand binding, dimerization, and phosphorylation activate downstream signaling pathways. His work has revealed the molecular basis of RTK activation and has informed the development of targeted kinase inhibitors for cancer therapy. He also investigates the role of FGF signaling in diabetes and metabolic regulation.
His recent publications span cancer genomics, structural biology, and neuroendocrine signaling, with a consistent focus on tyrosine kinase pathways. Articles from 2025 to 2014 demonstrate sustained leadership in elucidating RTK mechanisms, from atomic-level structures to disease implications in melanoma, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer. His research frequently employs X-ray crystallography, mutational analysis, and systems-level approaches.
Dr. Schlessinger has been recognized with numerous international honors:
- Clifford Prize for Cancer Research (2017)
- BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award (2014)
- AACR International Award for Cancer (2010)
- Medal of Danica Hrvatska Order, Republic of Croatia (2009)
- Elected Foreign Member, Croatian Academy of Sciences (2008)
He leads the Schlessinger Lab, which is actively engaged in cutting-edge research on kinase signaling and its dysregulation in disease. His work is supported by major grants, including NIH funding and team science initiatives such as the $10.5M grant awarded in 2023 for membrane protein research. He collaborates widely across Yale, with frequent co-authors in oncology, pathology, and endocrinology, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his impact.
