Joseph Ryan is a Professor and Associate Director for Undergraduate Education in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. His research focuses on contaminant fate and transport in natural waters, surface and colloid chemistry, and metal transport in watersheds affected by acid mine drainage. He holds a B.S. from Princeton University (1983), and M.S. and Ph.D. from MIT (1988, 1992). Ryan teaches courses such as Environmental Organic Chemistry and Water Chemistry. His work has led to significant honors, including the 2015 'Best of the Best' award for research on hydraulic fracturing fluids and the 2012 Distinguished Service Award. He has authored or co-authored numerous papers on topics including well integrity, mercury biogeochemistry, and groundwater contamination risks from oil and gas activities. Ryan’s research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address environmental challenges, integrating field studies, laboratory experiments, and modeling.
