Joseph Richard Winters II is the Alexander F. Hehmeyer Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Duke University, with secondary appointments in African and African American Studies, English, Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, and German Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University (2009) and a B.A. from Harvard University (1999). His research focuses on black religious thought, African-American literature, and critical theory, expanding understandings of black religiosity through interdisciplinary lenses. He has taught courses on hip hop and religion, existentialism, and black social death. Notable grants include a 2024-2025 fellowship from the National Humanities Center. Winters co-founded the 'Black Think Tank' in 2019 and has contributed to discussions on race, religion, and power through public lectures and publications. His work bridges literary analysis, political theory, and cultural critique.
