Joseph P. Derosier is an Assistant Professor of Modern Languages & Literatures (French) and the Mouat Junior Professor of International Studies at Beloit College. He also serves as Faculty Chair of the Weissberg Program in Human Rights and Social Justice and Chair of Medieval Studies. He holds a B.A. in French Literature and Social Thought/Political Economy from the University of Massachusetts, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in French and Francophone Literature from Northwestern University.
His research explores ethics, geopolitics, and biopolitics in medieval Francophone literature, focusing on race, gender, sexuality, and medievalisms. Key areas include 12th- and 13th-century Arthurian romance, orientalism, and the intersections of sovereignty and literature. His current project repositions medieval romance as a politically engaged genre, challenging traditional biopolitical narratives.
Teaching centers student-driven exploration of Francophone literature, film, and culture. Notable courses include Joan of Arc: From Heretic to Trans Saint and Medieval Fanfictions, which examine identity, nationalism, and historical legacy through medieval and modern lenses. He emphasizes creative pedagogy, encouraging projects ranging from essays to fanfiction.
Derosier collaborates with institutions like the Wright Museum, integrating interdisciplinary work into his scholarship. His reviews span medieval and postcolonial studies, reflecting his commitment to critical engagement with historical narratives.
