Joseph Marchand is a Professor of Economics at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts, Department of Economics. He serves as Director of the Alberta Centre for Labour Market Research (ACLMR) and Co-Director of the Institute for Public Economics (IPE). His research focuses on labor economics, energy market impacts, aging populations, and public policy. Marchand has advised the Alberta government on minimum wage policies and testified before the Canadian Senate. He holds a PhD from Syracuse University and has held visiting positions at institutions like the London School of Economics.
Education: BA (Rutgers University), MA (New York University), PhD (Syracuse University). Research interests include labor market dynamics influenced by energy booms, opioid crisis impacts, and the effects of minimum wage policies. He has authored influential studies on Alberta's labor markets and energy-driven economic shifts.
His recent work analyzes the employment effects of Alberta's $15 minimum wage policy and the societal impacts of the opioid crisis. Marchand also serves as editor of weekly labor economics reports (NEP) and contributes to policy discussions on inflation and job creation. He leads research initiatives through ACLMR and IPE, addressing regional economic challenges and policy solutions.
