Joseph H. Genz is Chair and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo,兼任 Islands of Opportunity Alliance (IOA)-LSAMP Director. He holds a PhD from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, with research focused on Marshallese navigation, cultural revival, and climate resilience. His work integrates oral histories with community engagement to address contemporary challenges in Pacific Islander communities. Genz teaches courses such as Cultural Anthropology, Cultures of Oceania, and Pacific Studies, emphasizing active, collaborative learning rooted in Indigenous pedagogies. His research projects include documenting ancestral voyaging knowledge and fostering STEM success through culturally resonant programs.
Genz’s academic contributions span publications on Pacific navigation, climate adaptation, and education. He advises graduate students in Heritage Management and mentors initiatives like the Keaholoa STEM Scholars Program. His community work includes addressing ethnic tensions in Hilo’s Marshallese diaspora and collaborating with organizations such as Waan Aelon in Majol and the Polynesian Voyaging Society. His interdisciplinary approach bridges anthropology, oceanography, and education to preserve cultural heritage and promote resilience.
