Joseph F. Merola

Joseph F. Merola, M.D., M.M.Sc., is a Professor and Chair of Dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, with additional roles as Professor of Internal Medicine (Rheumatology Division) and Professor in the Peter O’Donnell Jr School of Public Health. He holds the Mary Kay Inc. Distinguished Chair in Dermatology. His expertise spans psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, dermatomyositis, and complex medical dermatology. Dr. Merola earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and a Master of Medical Sciences from Harvard Medical School, with training at prestigious institutions including Brigham and Women’s Hospital and New York University Medical Center.

He is internationally recognized for his triple board certification in Dermatology, Internal Medicine, and Rheumatology. His research focuses on inflammatory/autoimmune skin diseases, pharmacoepidemiology, and clinical trials, including digital health innovations. As Director of Clinical Trials and Innovation at UT Southwestern, he leads translational research and outcome measure development.

Dr. Merola’s professional leadership includes roles as President of the Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis Clinics Multicenter Advancement Network (PPACMAN), President of the Medical Dermatology Society (MDS), and board memberships in the National Psoriasis Foundation and Lupus Foundation of America. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and received numerous awards, including the National Psoriasis Foundation’s Outstanding Educator Award and Boston’s Top Doctor recognition.

His clinical and research contributions emphasize patient-centered care, advancing therapies, and improving diagnostic tools. Upcoming recognitions include the 2024 National Psoriasis Foundation’s Commit to a Cure Gala honor in Dallas.
