Joseph Ecker

Joseph Ecker is a Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, where he serves as Director of the Genomic Analysis Laboratory. He is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator and affiliated with the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance. His work focuses on epigenetics and genomics across plant, mouse, and human systems.

Ecker’s research has revolutionized epigenetic studies by developing MethylC-Seq to map chemical modifications on DNA. He demonstrated the dynamic nature of the human brain epigenome during development and its relevance to neurodegenerative disorders. His lab also pioneered the sequencing of the first plant genome (Arabidopsis thaliana) and created the Salk T-DNA mutation collection, enabling global gene function analysis. Current work includes comparative stem cell epigenomics and drought-resistant plant mechanisms.

Scientific awards and honors highlight his contributions: election to the National Academy of Sciences (2006) and American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2015), AAAS Fellowship (2012), time magazine’s #2 Scientific Discovery (2009), and multiple fellowships and medals related to plant and molecular biology. The Ecker Lab combines genomic tools like DAP-seq and snmC-seq2 to decode regulatory networks in plants and the human brain.
