Joseph D. Romano is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Texas Tech University. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Syracuse University (1991), an M.S. in Physics from Syracuse University (1987), and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University (1985). His research focuses on gravitational wave data analysis, particularly the detection of stochastic gravitational radiation backgrounds. He has been co-chair of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration's Stochastic Sources Analysis Group since 2018 and previously from 2000-2006. His work spans ground-based interferometers, space-based detectors, and pulsar timing arrays. Key contributions include advancements in signal processing strategies for gravitational wave detection and theoretical frameworks for analyzing stochastic backgrounds.
Research Interests: Gravitational wave data analysis, stochastic gravitational radiation detection, LIGO collaboration leadership, pulsar timing arrays, and foundational problems in classical/quantum gravity. Notable contributions include the development of unified detection methods for stochastic backgrounds and insights into Hellings-Downs curve interpretations using electromagnetic analogies.
His publications address topics such as sensitivity curves for gravitational wave searches, phase-coherent mapping techniques, and the distinction between stochastic and deterministic gravitational wave signals. He has contributed to both specialized journals like Physical Review D and educational resources like the textbook Classical Mechanics.
