Joseph Crisco serves as the Henry F. Lippitt Professor of Orthopaedics and Professor of Engineering (Research) at Brown University. His academic career spans multiple disciplines, combining orthopaedic surgery with engineering principles to advance biomechanics research. He received his undergraduate education in Mathematics and Fine Arts from Amherst College and earned his doctorate in Applied Mechanics from Yale University.
Dr. Crisco's research focuses on musculoskeletal biomechanics, with particular emphasis on upper extremity mechanics, osteoarthritis, and neuromuscular therapy through toy and game play for children. His work extends to sports injury prevention and performance analysis. His laboratory has developed innovative techniques including biplanar videoradiography to study wrist and joint mechanics in vivo.
His extensive publication record includes over 260 peer-reviewed articles, with recent work examining thumb biomechanics, carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis, shoulder proprioception, and head impact exposure in sports. His research consistently bridges engineering principles with clinical orthopaedic applications.
- Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Biomechanics
- President of the American Society of Biomechanics
- Member of multiple NIH study sections
- Scientific advisor for International Federation of Women's Lacrosse, US Lacrosse, and USA Baseball
- Recipient of substantial NIH funding throughout his career
Dr. Crisco actively mentors undergraduate students in independent studies and honors work, as well as master's and doctoral students in his research laboratory. While he previously taught courses including Basic Biomechanics and Product Design and Development, he now focuses on guest lectures and research supervision. His work through JJ's Foundation supports children with special needs, demonstrating his commitment to applying biomechanical principles to improve pediatric care.
