Joseph C. Wu, MD, PhD, is Director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute and the Simon H. Stertzer, MD, Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He holds multiple affiliations including membership in Bio-X, the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Maternal & Child Health Research Institute, Stanford Medicine Children's Health Center for IBD and Celiac Disease, Sarafan ChEM-H, Stanford Cancer Institute, and Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. Dr. Wu received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine (1997) and PhD in Molecular & Medical Pharmacology from UCLA (2004), completing his clinical training at UCLA.
Dr. Wu's research focuses on biological mechanisms of patient-specific and disease-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to understand cardiovascular disease mechanisms, accelerate drug discovery, develop the "clinical trial in a dish" concept, and implement precision medicine for cardiovascular patients. His lab employs genomics, stem cells, cellular & molecular biology, physiological testing, and molecular imaging technologies. With over 650 publications and an H-index of 142, he has been recognized as a top 0.1% highly cited researcher in Web of Science for seven consecutive years (2018-2024).
Analysis of Dr. Wu's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on cardiac fibrosis mechanisms, iPSC-based disease modeling, metabolic aspects of cardiovascular disease, and innovative drug discovery approaches. His work bridges fundamental stem cell biology with clinical applications, particularly in precision medicine and cardiovascular pharmacology. The research spans from basic mechanisms of cardiac disease to therapeutic interventions using stem cell technologies.
Dr. Wu has received numerous prestigious awards including the NIH Director's New Innovator Award, NIH Roadmap Transformative Award, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and American Heart Association awards across multiple categories. He is a member of numerous prestigious academies including the National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Inventors, Academia Sinica (Taiwan), and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Wu has trained over 57 principal investigators currently leading research programs in the US and abroad. He serves on the FDA Cellular, Tissue, and Gene Therapies Advisory Committee and is co-founder of Greenstone Biosciences, a startup leveraging clinical genomics, iPSCs, and AI/ML to accelerate drug discovery. His leadership extends to professional societies where he recently completed his term as Immediate Past President of the American Heart Association (2023-2024).
