Joseph Bonneau is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at New York University (NYU), affiliated with the Courant Institute. He holds an honorary fellowship at the University of Melbourne and has held roles as an assistant professor at NYU (2017–2024), a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford, and a visiting professor at Melbourne. His research focuses on applied cryptography, blockchain systems, and cybersecurity, with notable contributions to cryptocurrencies, secure messaging, and verifiable randomness protocols. Bonneau is co-author of the textbook Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Technologies.
Education: Ph.D. (University of Cambridge, 2012), M.S. and B.S. (Stanford University, 2007 and 2006). He has advised numerous graduate and undergraduate students in areas like blockchain protocols, zero-knowledge proofs, and transparency systems. Bonneau has received awards including the NSF CAREER Award (2023) and the Caspar Bowden PET Award (2017).
