Bohling’s scholarship critically examines France’s energy and agricultural transitions. His 2018 book The Sober Revolution analyzes wine appellation systems, while his 2024 translated edition expands on this work. Current projects investigate nuclear energy’s role in post-1970s French development and historical energy conflicts.
His articles—spanning 2014 to 2024—trace themes like alcohol fuel debates, wine quality policies, and interwar economic expansion. These publications reveal interdisciplinary engagement with environmental change, state-society relations, and global commodity systems.
Boling teaches courses on modern Europe, energy transitions, and capitalist history, including HST 390 (Energy Crises) and HST 490/591 (World of Commodities).
