Joseph Boenzi, SDB is Professor of Philosophy at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT), where he teaches courses including Church: Modern to Contemporary (HS-2195), Frances de Sales: Sources & Spirit (SP-4571), Church On The Move (STSP-4725), Salesian Identity and Charism (SP-2130), In Search of the Church (STSP-3035), Devoted to God and Neighbor (SP-4295), Spirituality of Francis de Sales (SP-2505), and Devout and Direct in Daily Life (SP-4337). He is also affiliated with the Institute of Salesian Studies, where his academic work bridges Salesian spirituality with contemporary theological education.
Boenzi's educational background reflects his deep commitment to Salesian tradition, having earned his STD and STL from the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome, STB from the Salesian Pontifical University in Turin, a professional diploma in Education from the University of Alberta, and a BA from Don Bosco College in Newton, New Jersey. His academic journey has equipped him to explore the intersections of historical theology, spiritual formation, and contemporary ecclesial practice.
His research interests focus on Saint Francis de Sales in history and his spirituality, Youth Spirituality, Salesian Spirituality, Ecclesiology, and the History of the Church in modern & contemporary contexts, particularly Italy in the 19th century. Boenzi approaches these topics with a distinctive perspective that connects historical Salesian thought with present-day spiritual practice, emphasizing how the gifts of the Holy Spirit become fruitful in individual discipleship and ecclesial community formation.
Boenzi's publications from 2004-2015 demonstrate a consistent scholarly focus on Francis de Sales, Don Bosco, and Salesian spirituality, with particular attention to pastoral applications and contemporary relevance. His work spans journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and multimedia presentations that explore spiritual direction, youth ministry, and the practical application of Salesian charism in modern contexts.

As an educator, Boenzi emphasizes integrating theological studies with lived faith, encouraging students to move beyond academic understanding to practical application in their spiritual lives. Beyond the classroom, he is frequently called upon to direct retreats and facilitate workshops for parents and educators, extending his scholarly work into practical pastoral formation. His teaching philosophy centers on helping students see the Church as 'an ongoing story of ordinary people who can allow the extraordinary (charisms of the Spirit, rootedness in Christ) to transform their lives so that they become signs and bearers of God's love to new generations and new contexts.'
