Joseph A. Levert is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Tagliatela College of Engineering, University of New Haven. He joined in 2015 after 11 years as an Associate Professor and Mechanical Engineering Curriculum Leader at SUNY Maritime College, where he also chaired the College-wide Curriculum Committee. Prior to academia, he spent 16 years in industry, earning seven patents. His research focuses on tribology (wear/friction science) and design education, particularly through initiatives like Project CREATE, which develops assistive technologies for the disabled.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Arizona State University
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Tulane University
- Professional Engineer (Mechanical, State of California)
Research Interests: Levert's work bridges tribology and educational innovation. His tribology research examines chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) mechanisms, friction dynamics, and semiconductor manufacturing processes. He actively promotes design education through service-learning projects that apply engineering solutions to societal challenges.
Awards:
- Best Paper Award (ASME Tribology Division, 2000) for work on interfacial fluid mechanics in CMP.
Professional Contributions:
- Co-founded Project CREATE to integrate assistive technology design into student learning.
- Member of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, American Society of Engineering Education, and American Society of Mechanical Engineering.
Patents: Seven U.S. patents related to semiconductor fabrication, fiber mounting systems, and protective overlayers for integrated circuits.
