Josep Capdeferro Pla is a Legal Historian and Associate Professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). His research focuses on Early Modern Legal History (16th-18th centuries), with an emphasis on Catalan legal institutions within the Iberian monarchy and jus commune traditions. Key areas include: jurists, legal culture, rule of law, judicial records, representative institutions, local governments, and institutional accountability.
Recent works examine the Tribunal de Contrafaccions (1702-1713) - a pioneering Catalan constitutional court - and the Casa de les Egipcíaques (15th-18th centuries), where adulterous women were punished. He co-leads the Spanish Ministry-funded project "Conflictos singulares para juzgar, arbitrar o concordar (siglos XII-XX)" (2021-2024) with Dr. Rafael Ramis. Notably, he discovered a 1619 witchcraft defense document signed by 14 top Catalan lawyers, challenging abusive prosecutions.
His publications include: "Juristes, litigis i poder al comtat d'Empúries en temps de Jeroni Pujades (1568-1635)" (2017) analyzing feudal justice systems, and contributions to Springer's "Formation and Transmission of Western Legal Culture". He curated the 2024-2025 ICAB Library exhibition "Tortured, but Saved! Fourteen Lawyers to the Rescue of Caterina Freixa".
