Josefina Erikson is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Uppsala University. She serves as Principal Investigator for multiple research projects funded by major Swedish research councils including FORTE and the Swedish Research Council, demonstrating her established position within the academic community.
Dr. Erikson's research focuses on the intersection of gender and political institutions, with particular emphasis on parliamentary workplaces, political leadership, and gender equality mechanisms. Her work examines how gender norms operate within legislative settings, with special attention to the Swedish Riksdag as a case study. She employs qualitative methods and new institutional theory to analyze how political institutions shape and are shaped by gender dynamics, exploring topics such as gendered leadership conditions, parliamentary discrimination, and the sustainability of gender equality policies.
Her publication record shows a consistent trajectory of scholarly output in high-impact political science journals, with a clear thematic focus on gendered political institutions. Recent work demonstrates increasing attention to intersectional approaches, examining how gender interacts with race, age, and class within parliamentary contexts. Her research has evolved from analyzing Swedish prostitution policy to broader investigations of gender equality in legislative institutions across multiple dimensions.
Dr. Erikson actively collaborates with researchers including Cecilia Josefsson, Lenita Freidenvall, and Sandra Håkansson on projects examining gender balance in political leadership and EU policymaking. Her current research portfolio includes three major projects: 'Is parliament a gender equal workplace?' (2019-2023), 'The Struggle for Influence: Gender and Sexual Equality Policymaking at the European Union' (2023-2025), and 'What does it take to make leadership gender equal? Studies of political leadership in a gender balanced context' (2023-2026).
