Josefa Dorta Luis

Josefa Dorta Luis is a Full Professor of General Linguistics at the Department of Spanish Philology in the School of Arts at the University of La Laguna (ULL). She is the founder and director of the Phonetics Laboratory at ULL (SEGAI ULL) and leads the research group PROFONDIS (Grupo de prosodia, fonética y discurso lingüístico-literario).

Dr. Dorta Luis earned her PhD from the University of La Laguna in 1987 with the thesis "Modos y tiempos del verbo en la tradición gramatical hispánica desde Nebrija hasta Bello (1492-1860)". Her dissertation received a class award as outstanding research. She holds a Degree in Philosophy and Arts with a specialization in Spanish Philology, for which she was awarded the "Agustín de Bethencourt" prize by the Autonomous Government.

Her primary research interests include applied linguistics, prosody, phonetics and phonology, grammatical historiography, discourse analysis, and forensic phonetics. She has led significant research projects including "Entonación interrogativa y declarativa del español de Canarias y su relación con la de Cuba y Venezuela" (FFI2010-16993) and "Estudio comparativo de la entonación y del acento en zonas fronterizas del español" (FFI2014-52716-P). Her research has resulted in approximately 150 publications, including 17 books, book chapters, and numerous articles in high-impact journals.

Dr. Dorta Luis has attended around 70 national and international congresses across countries including Denmark, Mexico, Germany, and France. She has served as a visiting professor at prestigious institutions such as the University of Copenhagen, University of Texas-San Antonio, University of Barcelona, University of Salamanca, and Technická Univerzita V Liberci (Prague).

Dr. Dorta Luis has supervised four doctoral theses, three of which received international mention and the extraordinary Arts and Humanities award. She has extensive experience in research management, having organized numerous specialty courses and congresses, and led research projects and scientific infrastructure development, particularly for the Phonetics Laboratory at ULL. She serves on the scientific committees of various journals and acts as a reviewer for prestigious publications including the Journal of Pragmatics, EFE, RESLA, and others.
