Prof. Dr. Josef van Genabith is a leading academic in translation-oriented language technologies at Saarland University and heads the 'Multilingual Technologies' research area at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). His work bridges artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, and translation studies, focusing on neural machine translation, multimodal post-editing interfaces, and cognitive aspects of translation workflows. During his fellowship at the Zentrum für interkulturelle Studien (ZIS) in 2021, he collaborated with the TRACO (Translation & Cognition) team to plan a joint DFG proposal and conducted lectures/workshops on AI and multilingualism.
His recent publications highlight innovations in multimodal translation tools, including hand gestures, handwriting, and speech commands for machine translation post-editing, alongside foundational research in neural machine translation frameworks. Collaborations with researchers like Nico Herbig and Antonio Krüger emphasize user-centric design and cognitive load analysis in translation technologies. The neuro-laboratory established at ZIS under Prof. Silvia Hansen-Schirra complements his work through eye-tracking and EEG studies on interlingual processes.
