Josef Rauschecker is a Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, Neurology, and Neuroscience at Georgetown University, where he directs the Laboratory of Integrative Neuroscience and Cognition (LINC). He holds a Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship at TUM's Institute for Advanced Study. His research focuses on sensory systems, auditory cortex organization, and neuroplasticity, with contributions to understanding tinnitus, language processing, and cross-modal perception. He has mentored over 30 students and has been recognized with awards including the Humboldt Research Award and Finland Distinguished Professorship.
- Education: PhD (Dr.-Ing., 1980) and habilitation (1985) from TUM and Eberhard Karls University.
- Research Interests: Central Nervous System, Sensory Systems, Plasticity, Language and Music, Tinnitus.
- Awards: Includes the Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship (2013), Finland Distinguished Professor (2008–2013), and Humboldt Research Award (2002).
- Grants: Funded by NIH and NSF for studies on auditory cortex and neuroimaging.
- Labs/Teams: Director of LINC and co-leader of the PICCS international program with 9 global institutions.
His work spans animal electrophysiology, human fMRI, and neuroimaging, with key contributions linking auditory perception to brain circuitry. Recent studies explore cross-modal processing in the blind and neural mechanisms of tinnitus.
