معرفی
Jose Matas Alcala is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). He leads research activities within the EPIC (Energy Processing and Integrated Circuits) research group, focusing on power electronics, microgrids, and renewable energy integration.
Dr. Matas Alcala earned his PhD from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and holds degrees as Telecommunications Engineer and Technical Telecommunications Engineer with specialization in Electronic Equipment.
His research focuses on advanced control strategies for power systems, particularly in the areas of microgrid operation, grid synchronization techniques, and protection systems for networks with distributed energy resources. His work addresses critical challenges in renewable energy integration, including voltage and frequency stability, harmonic distortion management, and cyber-resilient control architectures. Dr. Matas Alcala has made significant contributions to synchronization algorithms like SOGI-FLL and droop control methods that enable reliable operation of modern power systems with high penetration of renewable sources.
His publication record demonstrates consistent output in top-tier journals including IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, and IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. His recent work shows increasing focus on cyber-physical security of power systems, advanced control for DC microgrids, and energy management strategies for emerging applications like 5G infrastructure and satellite power systems.
Dr. Matas Alcala has received recognition for his research contributions:
- Best Paper Award at the VI Iberoamerican Congress of Smart Cities
- Best Paper Award at the 2023 International Conference on Predictive Control of Electrical Drives and Power Electronics (PRECEDE 2023)
He has supervised multiple doctoral students whose research has advanced power calculation algorithms, synchronization techniques, and fault protection methods for modern power systems. His research has been supported by competitive projects from national and regional funding agencies, including the Spanish State Research Agency and the Catalan Government's Research and Innovation Plan.
As a core member of the EPIC research group, Dr. Matas Alcala collaborates extensively with researchers across UPC and international institutions. His work often involves interdisciplinary teams addressing the technical and regulatory challenges of modernizing electrical infrastructure for sustainable energy futures.
