Jose Ferreira is an Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Sculpture and Expanded Practices area at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Born in Mozambique, he holds Fine Art degrees from the Durban University of Technology, South Africa. His academic journey includes roles as Research Fellow in Digital Media at the University of Sunderland, UK, and faculty positions at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Ferreira’s work bridges sculpture, installation, and interdisciplinary practices, exploring themes like identity, urban landscapes, and historical memory.

Research Interests: Ferreira’s practice centers on sculpture, photography, and installation, with a focus on spatial cartography, urban studies, and cultural memory. His work interrogates the interplay of power, identity, and historical narratives, often using walking as a research methodology. Projects like Anatomy of an Archive and Line of Sight exemplify his exploration of contested histories and spatial politics.
Awards & Grants: Recipient of the Fulbright US Scholar Award (2023-24), Prince Claus Fund Grant, London Arts Council Award, and others. His work has been exhibited globally, including at the Havana Biennale, Hyde Park Art Centre, and MiMo Museum of Moving Image, Leiria.
