Jos J.G.M. van der Tol

Jos J.G.M. van der Tol is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering department at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He leads research in opto-electronic integration, photonic membranes, and magneto-optic devices. His work focuses on advancing telecom, datacom, and sensing technologies through photonic integrated circuits. He collaborates with TU/e’s Physics of Nanostructures group and leads the EU WIPE project integrating BiCMOS electronics with photonic circuits on indium phosphide.

Van der Tol holds a PhD in Physics from Leiden University (1985). His career includes roles at KPN Research (telecom components) and TU/e since 1999. He has authored/co-authored over 200 publications and 26 patents in integrated optics and networks.

His research ambitions include scaling photonic ICs and integrating electronic functionality for high-frequency solutions. Current projects emphasize magneto-optic device integration and energy-efficient transceivers. He supervises 27 academic works and contributes to sustainable development goals through advanced photonic technologies.
