Jorja Leap is Adjunct Professor of Social Welfare at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs, where she also serves as Executive Director of the Social Justice Research Partnership and Co-Founder/Director of the Watts Leadership Institute. She holds a B.A. in Sociology, M.S.W., and Ph.D. in Psychological Anthropology from UCLA.
Her research focuses on:
- Gang dynamics and violence prevention
- Trauma-informed justice reform
- Reentry programs for formerly incarcerated individuals
- Community-based public safety initiatives
- Women and youth in criminal justice systems
Leap directs a longitudinal evaluation of Homeboy Industries and leads research for the White House Community Violence Intervention Collaborative. She has served as policy advisor on gangs for Los Angeles County and as qualitative research director for the LA Mayor's Gang Reduction Youth Development Program.
Leap is author of several books including Jumped In: What Gangs Taught Me About Violence, Drugs, Love and Redemption and Entry Lessons: The Stories of Women Fighting for Their Place, Their Children, and Their Futures After Incarceration, with proceeds supporting reentry programs.
