Joost Poort is a Professor at the Institute for Information Law (IViR) within the Faculty of Law at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on empirical studies of copyright infringement and digital media consumption patterns across international markets.
Poort specializes in analyzing the relationship between legal and illegal content acquisition channels, with particular emphasis on how market developments rather than enforcement measures influence online piracy behavior. His work employs large-scale consumer surveys to understand media consumption across multiple jurisdictions, examining music, films, series, books, and games.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on empirical research methodology applied to copyright challenges. The 2018 'Global Online Piracy Study' represents his most significant contribution, analyzing consumer behavior across 13 countries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia through a survey of nearly 35,000 respondents. More recently, he has expanded his research to examine how emerging technologies like AI impact copyright frameworks, particularly in the music industry.
As a researcher at IViR, Poort collaborates with leading scholars in copyright law and digital policy. His work provides valuable empirical evidence for policymakers addressing copyright challenges in the digital environment, with particular relevance to understanding consumer behavior in global digital markets.
