Jonne Hoek is a researcher affiliated with Wageningen University & Research, specializing in the philosophy of technology and technological mediation theory. They were previously a PhD student in the Philosophy Department at the University of Twente, focusing on how technologies mediate human conceptions of transcendence—defined as the absolute boundaries of knowledge and intervention—with particular interest in technologies framing life’s beginning and end as either a 'gift' or something 'makeable'.
Their academic background includes a bachelor's degree and research master's in philosophy (cum laude) from Radboud University and Humboldt University zu Berlin, where they explored intersections of ethics, metaphysics, and religion through the works of Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. They were also involved in a KNAW-funded project examining tensions between reason and religion during their studies.
Currently, Jonne contributes to the technological mediation theory VICI project under the supervision of Peter-Paul Verbeek and Ciano Aydin. This research investigates how emerging technologies redefine ethical and existential boundaries of human life, aligning with 4TU.Ethics and Technology’s interdisciplinary mission.
