Jonathan Wistow is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Durham University, where he also serves as Co-Director of Qualitative Complexity Science, Evaluation and Health in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health, Co-Director of the Durham Research Methods Centre, and Co-Director of the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing. His career began as a Research Fellow in 2007, evolving into a Lecturer role by 2015 before attaining his current position.
His interdisciplinary research integrates:
- Health inequalities through complexity theory and policy framings
- Climate adaptation focusing on elderly care infrastructure resilience
- Political economy examining post-industrial class dynamics
- Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) as a core methodological innovation
He actively supervises five postgraduate research students: Ben Main, David Hicks, Rachel Reay, Sijin Li, and Trayten Zhang. Current collaborations include Durham County Council's Public Health team on social determinants of health, air pollution impacts on neurohealth, and place-based complexities.
