Jonathan Wilson is a Professor of Environmental Biology and Environmental Studies at Haverford College. He holds the endowed chair in Environmental Biology and has served as Director of the Environmental Studies Program and Chair of the Environmental Studies Department. Wilson earned a B.A. in Computer Science and Earth and Planetary Sciences from Johns Hopkins University (2003) and a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard University (2009). His postdoctoral roles included the O.K. Earl Postdoctoral Scholar at Caltech, focusing on geology and geobiology. He joined Haverford in 2011, becoming an Associate Professor in 2018 and a full Professor in 2024.
Wilson’s research spans plant physiology, paleobotany, and environmental science. Key areas include the coevolution of plants and environments over 475 million years, fossil plant hydraulic strategies, and climate impacts of CO2 levels. His work has been published in high-impact journals like Science and Nature Geoscience. He leads collaborative projects on plant responses to elevated CO2 and develops open-source tools like CodeCarbon.io to measure computational carbon footprints.
