Dr. Jonathan Ryan Davis is an Associate Professor of Urban Education in the Department of Educational Administration and Secondary Education at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), where he coordinates the Urban Secondary Education Program. His work focuses on preparing effective educators for diverse school contexts, particularly urban settings.
Dr. Davis earned his Ph.D. in Sociology with a focus on education from The Graduate Center, City University of New York (2015), an M.A. in Social Studies from Teachers College, Columbia University (2005), and a B.A. in History and African/African-American Studies from Washington University (2003), where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.
His research emphasizes strategies for preparing new teachers, including culturally responsive/sustaining teaching, classroom management, and diverse and adaptable pedagogy. Dr. Davis' work consistently addresses the challenges and opportunities in urban education contexts, with a particular focus on middle and secondary school environments. His recent publications form a cohesive series on adaptable teaching strategies that can be implemented across various school settings, with his most recent work including the 2025 publication 'Planning for Teaching Success: 30 Practical Strategies for All School Contexts.'
