معرفی
Jonathan Rosenberg is a Professor of Twentieth-Century U.S. History at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. His research centers on the global dimensions of American history, particularly the intersections of music, race, and diplomacy. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Harvard University and previously studied at Juilliard, bringing a unique interdisciplinary lens to his scholarship.
His research interests include Twentieth-Century U.S. History, Transnational History, and African American History, with a particular focus on how American musicians, especially African Americans, influenced and were influenced by international contexts. His work explores cultural diplomacy, civil rights, and the role of art in transcending social and racial boundaries.
The recent article, 'How America’s Expat Performers Captivated the French Capital in the 1920s', reflects a broader trend in his scholarship: examining how African-American artists like Josephine Baker and Eugene Bullard navigated and reshaped global cultural landscapes in the early 20th century. These works fall within the domains of cultural history, transnational studies, and African-American studies, emphasizing mobility, identity, and resistance.
Rosenberg has authored several major books, including Dangerous Melodies: Classical Music in America from the Great War through the Cold War (2020) and How Far the Promised Land?: World Affairs and the American Civil Rights Movement from the First World War to Vietnam (2006), and is currently working on The Jazz Expats: How American Jazz Musicians Left Their Country and Changed the World. While no formal advising or grant activity is mentioned, his active publication and speaking record suggest ongoing scholarly engagement. He is affiliated with the Department of History at the John F. Kennedy Institute, where he has participated in the 'Uncertain Boundaries' research program.
