Jonathan Pearlman is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS), where he also serves as Associate Dean of Commercial Translation. He is based at Bakery Square in Pittsburgh, PA, and is a key figure in advancing rehabilitation technology and assistive devices.
His research interests center on assistive technology, participatory action design, and new product development, with a strong emphasis on user-centered innovation in mobility devices and home health technologies. He is actively engaged in technology transfer and commercialization efforts in rehabilitation science.
Dr. Pearlman leads the Master of Rehabilitation Technology (MRT) program and is the Director of the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals. He is also associated with the Pitt Healthy Home Lab, which explores smart and accessible living environments. His work bridges engineering, rehabilitation, and entrepreneurship to improve health outcomes through innovative technology solutions.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, and a PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Pearlman has contributed to initiatives such as International Wheelchair Day and is committed to interprofessional education and community engagement in rehabilitation sciences. He advises on commercial translation of research and supports innovation in rehabilitation technology through academic and global partnerships.
