University of Technology Sydneyمعرفی
Jonathan Paul Marshall is a Senior Lecturer in Social and Political Science at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, specializing in the anthropology of disorder, disruption, and complexity in social systems. His academic journey began with a PhD from the University of Sydney (1994-2001), followed by postdoctoral work examining online gender and communities, resulting in his book Living on Cybermind: Categories, Communication and Control.
His research focuses on how disorder, disruption, and unintended consequences are inherent features of social life, particularly examining climate technologies, energy transitions, and digital communication systems. Marshall argues that irregularity and disruption cannot be ignored as they are vital parts of social systems, with significant implications for politics, economics, and ecological relations. Current projects include community energy initiatives with Geni.Energy and Enova Energy in Narrabri, investigating how government policies constrain community renewable energy projects despite technological feasibility.
His scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on complexity theory applied to climate change, energy transitions, and information systems. The 15 most recent publications demonstrate his evolving research trajectory from digital communication studies toward climate technologies and energy transitions, with increasing emphasis on community-based solutions, policy barriers, and the social dynamics of technological disruption. His work consistently challenges assumptions about orderly social systems, highlighting how attempts to produce order frequently generate the disorder we fear.
- Awarded an ARC Future Fellowship (2016-2022) for 'Society and Climate Change: Social analysis of a disruptive technology'
- Recipient of a QEII Fellowship for research on workplace disruption through software implementation
- Co-editor of 'Crisis, Movement, Management: Globalising Dynamics' and 'Depth Psychology, Disorder and Climate Change'
As an educator, Marshall currently serves as main supervisor for three students working on energy transitions and co-supervisor for two others. He teaches in the 'Self and Society' introductory course and has previously supervised students across multiple departments. His laboratory is effectively the field of community energy projects and social dynamics of technological implementation, where he collaborates with organizations like Clean Energy for Eternity and community energy collectives to develop practical applications of his theoretical work on complexity and disorder.
