Dr Jonathan Leader Maynard is a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at King’s College London’s Department of Political Economy, Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. He concurrently serves as a Parliamentary Academic Fellow at the UK House of Commons International Affairs Unit. Previously, he held positions at the University of Oxford, including Rank-Manning Junior Research Fellow (2013-2015) and Departmental Lecturer in International Relations (2015-2020).
His research focuses on ideology’s role in armed conflict, genocide, state terror, and extremist politics. Key areas include ethical dimensions of political violence, methodological debates in political theory, and contemporary ideological dynamics. His 2022 book Ideology and Mass Killing examines radicalized security politics in genocides, while co-editing the Routledge Handbook of Ideology and International Relations synthesizes global ideological analysis frameworks.
Publications span American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Peace Research, and British Journal of Political Science, addressing topics from idealization in political theory to dehumanization research trends. His work bridges political theory, conflict studies, and ethical analysis.
He supervises PhDs on genocide studies, political ideology, extremism, and ethical violence frameworks. Active in research groups like the Political Economy of Peace and Conflict and Global South Research Group, he explores non-European perspectives and conflict resolution strategies. His interdisciplinary approach integrates political science, philosophy, and cognitive science methodologies.
