Jonathan J. Cavallero is a Professor of Rhetoric, Film, and Screen Studies at Bates College. He specializes in film and television studies with a focus on race/ethnicity in media, film festivals, Hollywood and Bollywood cinema, and U.S. cultural history. His research also explores issues of diversity and inclusion in pedagogy.
Education: Ph.D. in Communication and Culture & American Studies (Indiana University), M.A. in Media Studies (Penn State University), B.A. in Government with a Film Studies minor (Georgetown University).
Research Interests: Cavallero’s work examines Italian American representation in media, film authorship, and transnational cinema. His book, *Hollywood’s Italian American Filmmakers*, analyzes directors like Capra and Scorsese. He has taught at multiple institutions, earning teaching awards for courses on media and public speaking.
Publications: Over 30 journal articles and book chapters, including works in *Cinema Journal*, *The Journal of Popular Culture*, and *Italian American Review*. He has edited special issues on Italian Americans and television.
Awards: Two Excellence in Teaching Awards (Indiana University).

Cultural Background: Cavallero traces his scholarly interest in Italian American media to his heritage, with great-grandparents immigrating to the U.S. in the early 20th century.
