Jonathan Green

Dr Jonathan Green is a seabird biologist and currently serves as Programme Director for the BSc Environmental Science at the University of Liverpool. He also holds a lecturer position in the Department of Ecology & Marine Biology. His roles include Head of Discipline for Ecology & Marine Biology (2012-2017) and Deputy Assessment Officer. He is affiliated with organizations such as JNCC, Natural Resources Wales, RSPB, BTO, and offshore windfarm developers.

Jonathan studied Zoology at the University of Cambridge (1995), completed a PhD in 2001 and postdoc at the University of Birmingham, followed by a Fellowship at La Trobe University, Australia (2005-2008). His research integrates ecology, physiology, and behavior to address seabird adaptation in marine and terrestrial environments, with a focus on energetics and anthropogenic threats like climate change and windfarm developments.

His research interests emphasize seabird energetics, foraging strategies, and conservation in polar to tropical regions. He collaborates with governments, NGOs, and industry on projects such as UK windfarm impact assessments and Caribbean seabird conservation via Darwin+ grants. Recent work includes developing tools like the Seabird Field Metabolic Rate Calculator and tracking programs in UK Overseas Territories.

Jonathan has secured grants from NERC, Defra, Scottish Government, and others. Key funding periods include £1.2M from EcoWind-ACCELERATE (2022-2026) and £1.5M for Caribbean conservation projects (2016-2022). He advises PhD student Elayna Daniels through a CASE studentship.

He is an Associate Editor for Emu - Austral Ornithology (2008–present) and Endangered Species Research (2009–2013). He has organized major seabird conferences and contributed to conservation strategies through roles like Chair of the 13th International Seabird Group Conference (2018) and Welsh Government’s Expert Group for the Welsh Seabird Conservation Strategy.
